Golf at San Antonio Resort

On Friday I returned to San Antonio to play some more golf, this time at a resort, the Hyatt Hill Country

Now I must admit I was not in the best of golf shape after a late night of celebration and also not in the best of moods for some other reasons by the time I arrived at the golf course.  So I did not pay as much attention as I should have to everything about the course.  While the parking lot was full of pickups and horse trailers, there were very few folks on the golf course; apparently big convention of the Texas Wildlife Association at the resort and their parking overflowed.

The folks at the pro shop were GREAT!  Gave me a bag tag with my name inscribed for free and encouraged me to have a great time on the course.  I was again going to be playing by myself as no one else wanted to brave the middle of the day heat again :)  Oh well so much for meeting folks on the golf course I guess LOL.  The starter gave me the lowdown on the course and sent me on my way.

The course was a little brown from drought (as compared to Cedar Creek the day before) but in good shape.  I played pretty quickly in the heat (finished with a round of 80).  I did catch up with a single male golfer on the back nine and then a single male golfer caught up with me as we were all stuck behind a very slow foursome.  I graciously asked the gentlemen who caught me if he wanted to play together for the last few holes so we both would not have to wait and he said yes. I  tried to approach the gentlemen who I had caught but he clearly wanted no part of playing with a female as he completely refused to look my way and just hurriedly teed off and drove off.  Oh well his loss  (although he was pretty cute) LOL

My new playing partner was very surpised that a single female would be out playing by herself.  He kept asking me about why I was playing and seemed not to accept that it was just for fun.  He also was trying to impress me by telling me how he had done on previous holes including a wild story about on one of the par 5s hitting 4 iron, pitching wedge, pitching wedge to the green??  Sounded kind of fishy but whatever.  I finished the round pretty exhausted and very sweaty and hoping to avoid sitting in traffic on way to my hotel by stopping at the 19th hole grill.  Unfortunately, the grill was closed for a private event for the conventioneers so I was directed to another little spot to grab a bite to eat.  Well it ended up being the bar!  I walk in to a full bar of people dressed pretty nice and I have only changed shirts and am in my skort.  I was soo tired too, but had a quick bite and lots of water then headed to hotel.  I was in no mood to chit chat with anyone.  Came to realize by next morning that I was pretty dehydrated and too tired to play another round as I had planned so headed back home next morning.

Golf in San Antonio

Headed south to San Antonio to try some of the great courses there.  I wanted to play courses in the Hill Country and with nice elevation changes, although I was a little worried about the effect of the prolonged drought on the courses.

On the 25th I played one of the best municipal courses in the state, Cedar Creek.  Just the drive out to the course is pretty impressive with some large hills.  I arrived early and had a snack then was sent out -- by myself :)  The starter was a great guy who told me to go ahead early and also about the course.  I played two balls like I usually do when playing alone so that I can better pace myself and also to get in more golf.  It was a pretty hot day, about 102-104 and somewhat humid, so not that many folks on the course, but the course was BEAUTIFUL!  Rolling hills and green fairways and trees.   Plays fairly for all golfers and well placed tee boxes.
On the first tee I had a small audience as two maintenance workers were in the bunker on the left.  Thank goodness I managed to stay out of it.

I did run into a group of 6 on the back nine who had slowed up play.  There were some older folks who could barely walk.  They allowed a male twosome ahead of me to play through but then seemed unwilling to do the same for me.  Finally, just went around them as they were SUPER slow.  As I finished my round -- quite sweaty by the way -- a storm blew in and apparently rained hard for about 10 minutes while I was in the locker room.  Pretty funny when I walked out of the locker room now in a halter dress!  Saw no ladies on  the course and so the guys all did a double take as I carried by bag to my car.  I was headed on for the nite to Corpus Christi for a birthday celebration but would return to San Antonio for more golf the next afternoon.  And I definitely want to play more SA municipal courses!

Here are some great pics of Cedar Creek:

Caddies

Just an observation here but has anyone noticed that many of the PGA caddies are really HOT!  Much better looking than many of the pros and they can wear shorts. LOL  Maybe they need to make a PGA Caddy calendar....:))

Plantation Golf Club

Today I used my Eagle Card and drove to Frisco for a free round of golf at Plantation Golf Club.  The pro on the phone seemed a little surprised when I had called the day before to make my tee time; he asked twice if it was just me :)  It is about a 50 minute drive from my house and a toll but I wanted to try this course.  There were not too many folks when I arrived and the clubhouse at first thought I would be playing by myself.  However, when I drove to the first tee at my scheduled time, there were two gentlemen there waiting and another soon drove up, so we made a foursome.  That was fine with me and off we went!  The guys were all former Air Force members and one was a retired sergeant.  I outdrove all of them on the first tee by about 30 yards and that broke the ice.

The course is a little quirky to me from the front tees which play just under 5000 yards.  A number of the par 4 holes are pretty short -- just 200 yards or a little more, but they often have funny turns or water hazards.  So while I drive it about 190-200 I could not always go for the green.  From the back tees it is just about 6300 yards long so probably could play pretty easy for a scratch golfer who has long drives.  The greens are not difficult either so a fun, playable course for everyone and tee boxes are nicely placed for all.

Now I will say by the time we were near the end of the round and the guys had had a few beers, there were a few awkward moments.  One of the guys began to openly flirt with me and ask where I played mostly as he wanted to come play there as well; reason this was awkward?  He was MARRIED and he talked openly to his wife on the phone!  I just ignored the comments and one of the older guys helped redirect the conversation.  Sorry just not into married men and find it sad when they become too forward.  I must say I have played golf with quite a few married men with whom I was randomly paired at the golf course, and most of them are great guys.  They typically just talk about wishing their wives played more or how often they play golf with their wives.

HOLE IN ONE!!

I made my first HOLE IN ONE!  Played the retirement community golf course at Robson Ranch near Denton.  I was playing alone and caught up with a foursome at #11, a par 3 128 yard shot.  They had all already teed off (none were on the green)  and so I checked the yardage, grabbed by 6 iron and just walked up and hit the tee shot.  It bounced once on the green just short of the flag and then into the hole!!  I was SHOCKED!  The older foursome was so sweet; they signed my score card and just kept patting me on the back.  I drove on up to the green and plucked my ball out of the cup - then I jumped up and down and screamed!  I drove to the next hole -- a quirky par 5 -- still in shock. I began to text/call my friends.   My golf partner/swing czar called from Corpus to congratulate me and told me to catch my breath and finish my round well.

The course is a little funny in that not a lot of long shots. I was usually within 100 yards after my tee shot but there were some fun curves to the holes and such.  Was a really hot day and I was moving around the course. Started getting calls and texts from friends who had seen my message and another single golfer (male) caught up with me. I waved him through and he told me congratulations on the hole in one that he had heard about.  I finished the round in a sort of daze but when I tallied my score, I realized I had finished my first ever UNDER PAR round!!  Two under! WOW what a day on the course.

Only bad thing about it was that I played alone and then went home alone with no one to celebrate with. Kind of brought me back to reality.  Met up with a girlfriend later that evening for a margarita and a laugh but I do hope that the next time I have a hole in one that I have a special someone to share it with :)

Sex Appeal on the Course

Okay I will start with stating clearly I am so NOT a prude but there are times that I do not need sex thrown at me and the golf course is one of those.  Cart girls who bring much needed cold drinks and ice on those super hot Texas summer days on the course are god-sends, but I have to just laugh at loud when the guys flirt soo hard with these young ladies.  Now the ladies are smart and play up the flirting because it usually leads to great tips for them.  But some of the guys I have played with really are just hysterical as they try to impress the cart girl, especially if there is more than a 30 year age gap!  This must be why there are so many Cialas and Viagra commercials during televised golf events!! LOL

I do get a little cranky when I play a charity tournament and the sponsors use scantily clad young lady around the golf course.  The idea is to play up to the men in the tournament who are the majority and help pry open their wallets to raise more money.  Again it can be funny when the hot young lady struts up to the guy and asks him if he wants to buy a mulligan...even more funny if she doesn't know what a mulligan is.  But I have had an instance or two when I was with a guy friend in the cart and the young lady walked right up to my guy and openly flirted with him!! That was just insulting as if I was not even sitting there, but hey usually gave me incentive to hit a great shot.

Now one of the funniest episodes I have had recently on the course was when I was playing with a great guy friend who has a real eye for the ladies.  He was very excited when we were placed together with two young ladies one day to play a round; he could not wait to flirt with them.  On the first hole or two he did his best to impress them (and he is a pretty hot guy I admit) but they just did not seem to respond which perplexed him.  I had been watching all of this and observing the ladies' behavior; they had no problem talking with me but were hesitant around him.  On the second hole, however, it became clear what was happening and I just broke into a HUGE smile.  The two ladies had absolutely NO interest in my male friend (or any male really for that matter) and were totally into each other.  Fine by me, I'm pretty liberal and just believe folks should be with who makes them happy.  My guy friend though was soooo disappointed and just did not enjoy the round as much as he would have otherwise; he had been looking foward to being the only guy with a group of 3 hot ladies!  I must admit I found this TOTALLY hilarious!

I would like to see a cart guy once in a while -- all beefed up with great muscles and offering me a cold drink :)  Of course I would probably just think I was hallucinating in the heat!
